The Plainsrunner – Chapter 46 & 47

Screen Shot 2018-08-23 at 5.16.00 PMSupervisor Steel has Specialist Blunt follow the arrows.  They come to what might be a door with a doorbell.  Tallgrass puts on his pressure suit and goes out to ring it.  To his surprise, there’s an answer.

Check that off the Bucket List!

Good Morning Oliver, I feel like this is my Sunday!IMG_1789It was so much fun volunteering at the Festival of the Grape and very rewarding this year.

I was looking forward to the challenge of the “Sabrage of the Oliver Bubbly” shot.

(That is wacking the cork off with a sword) This is a challenging shot to say the least, however, I have done it many times in my career.

Secretly I have always wanted to try it.  IMG_1790MLA Linda Larsen needed a stand in due to her schedule. I bounce up and down and she picked me!IMG_1791First I gave my camera to Don Lawlor and I can see I was more surprise than anyone! The cork came off with the first good wack!IMG_1793So much fun! I admit I watched the pros very carefully over the years!IMG_1794That kitchen knife looks a little scary in my hands!IMG_1795A little posing going on!IMG_1796May I take a bow, one thing off the bucket list!

Love Oliver, more photos as I edit them.

I can’t give Rhoda, our fearless leader, 1000 photos with raindrops on them.

The Festival of the Grape is just one of the reasons I love to live in Oliver. It was a great weekend!

MarcAtkinson

Friday, October 12th, marks the first concert of this season’s South Okanagan Concert Society’s program.  The Marc Atkinson Trio, a group described as “melodically captivating, sensually charged and ferociously, technically awe inspiring” will be the catalyst for high spirits at Venables Theatre.

Juno nominated Marc Atkinson, on guitar, is backed by Scott White on acoustic bass and Brett Martens on rhythm guitar as well as guest artist Cameron Wilson on violin.

Marc is known for his ability to spin out seemingly impossible–to-play, breathtaking lines at will.  The emotional nuance and sense of humour he brings to his work has engaged audiences for more than two decades.  He draws on classical, jazz, roots, and even some rock traditions to delight his audience with new takes on old tunes and sensitive renderings of his own highly melodic compositions.

Brett Martens, pulls from his knowledge of soul, jazz, reggae and latin music.  His percussive guitar feel is sensitive, yet lively and infectious.  He leads and performs with many bands of his own.

Scott White is a multi-faceted bassist and music therapist currently residing in Berlin.  He has performed with many of Canada’s most renowned musicians and toured the world.  He manages to practice music therapy in various hospitals, compose and teach while acting as a music director for a Cirque du Soleil show in Germany.

Take all the Trio has to offer after four award winning CDs and decades of touring and then add the sounds of Cameron Wilson’s sweet and playful violin!  Versatile and talented, his work showcases many genres of music.  It comes as no surprise that he has performed with the CBC Radio orchestra, the Vancouver Bach choir and also with Bryan Adams, Spirit of the West and Raffi.

Tickets are on sale now at http://www.venablestheatre.ca or at the theatre box office Tuesdays to Thursdays from 10 to 3 pm.  Two or more tickets in advance cost $21/ticket.  A single ticket in advance is $23.  Single tickets at the door are $25.

Children and youth are $2.50.   All concerts in the series start at 7:30 pm.

Location, Location, Location! Hollywood take note!

The Wild Women invaded Oliver for the 9th Wild Women Workshop – Steampunk!

IMG_1128

Jan styling in her Grandpa’s hat at Oliver’s Train Station, also known as the Info Centre.

Oliver you showed off your diversity of locations  this month.

IMG_0640“What is Steampunk?” I have been asked that a lot.

IMG_1270My definition of steampunk is a sub genre of science fiction, meets victorian transportation, plus art, plus taking items form the industrial age and repurposing them into the future.

IMG_1538The Pentiction Art Gallery first introduced me to Steampunk through the history of transportation in the Okanagan. I had 5 paintings in the show. How lucky!

IMG_0746My thoughts were to cancelled the WWW – Steampunk this year because I did not think I had anything to offer. It has been a challenging year!

However the gasp from my friend made me reconsider. I turned on the auto pilot, starting making props, sent out my visions to Diane Gane – Props and Dianne Gibson – Wardrobe, scouted locations and got permission for the sites . . .  well, most of them . . . . we didn’t get shot for trespassing and the rattlers kept their distance from “that” site!

IMG_0577

. . . uhmmm . . not sure where this is . . . and we scared away any snakes!

Locations is where Oliver shined.

IMG_0777

The Oliver Museum and Diane’s 1903 mimeograph machine were perfect in the shot.

Way back in 1968 I started visiting Oliver, the land has always seduced me. I loved the entrance from the north. As soon as you get to where the Goats hang out the trees and land change. The rocks to the east and west open up to this amazing valley. The way the light plays on the east benches gives me great pleasure. I am home here in Oliver!

WW,-Moe-Labyrinth

Oliver’s Labyrinth, the grass looks magical.

The natural beauty aside, looking for locations, I found an old train station, a jail, the labyrinth and the desert, all were perfect for Steampunk fantasies.

IMG_0852The other question I get is . . Why?

Why do a group of Wild Women let me dress em up, paint em up and photograph them in all this makeup and costumes? Why do they agree to be living sculptures?

IMG_1323Because it is fun! Period!

IMG_1347And very empowering!

And really, why not!

IMG_0334 copy.jpgI must admit as soon as Tiffany sat down for her makeup, auto pilot switched off and I was back in the saddle! This year the Wild Woman Workshop gave me back to me.

Screen Shot 2018-09-12 at 8.29.22 PM                       I thank Diane Gane for sourcing the amazing props. The suitcases are from her family. So sorry about the dent in the 115 year old mimeograph machine.

And I love the birdcage . . . it is in my custody at the moment.

IMG_1233Dianne Gibson was brilliant this year! I had my heart set on wings and she came through! Not an easy task, but Cindy got her wings! Thank you!

IMG_1388Most of all I thank the Wild Women 2018. What an amazing job you all did.

IMG_1384The paintings are on display at Maker Place! On Station Street across from the Coast Hotel.

Do stop by and check out the paintings of these amazing Women.
