Charles Pollard for Council

What are you thinking! Running for council, opening yourself up to public scrutiny?

I find that you have to if you want to get anywhere in the world you can’t stay outside you have to be involved.

When on council, how do you represent people with an opposite opinion to yours, specially if their’s is the majority?

There will be a right place, a right time to bring things up again to find the crack in their ideas.

Name a historical leader you admire.

My Dad! He has always pushed ahead. Japanese POW 3 1/4 years. He was always doing something for others. After he retired he worked 18 years for seniors. He promised my Mom he would live till 100. He made it to 100 and 2 months. I promised Dad I would live to 100 and 3 months.

Define leadership.

A Leader is a person who is a team player, listens to both side of the argument before finding a solution.

What do you say to people who just see a big old guy with a hat?

If they are looking at me, I say hi and acknowledge them. If they have a problem I’d like to listen. It is a matter of what people want to believe about me. I try to work with people.

Why should we trust you?

I work with what I got and hopefully people will trust me, they’ve got to have a safe feeling with me.

What is the cost of freedom?

The cost of freedom is when your conscience is free of problems. Open to be free and can’t hide things. Good attitude & communicate.

Don Lawlor for Council

What are you thinking! Running for council, opening yourself up to public scrutiny?

I have no calms opening up my scrutiny. People need to do that. Need background support to support the decision  to run for council.

When on council, how do you represent people with an opposite opinion to yours, specially if theirs is the majority?

I would address every point that they have. I will listen to the people they deserve it.

Name a past leader you admire.

So many of them. I admired Prime Mister Pierre Trudeau. He had class, got things done, was a world statesman. He was respected around the world.

Define leadership.

Leadership is the ability to gather information from people. The pros and cons. To select the best solution and implement it with everybody even the ones that disagree.

What do you want to say to those who see only big blue eyes?

I’ll take their vote if all they see is the big blue eyes and don’t look at what I can do!

Why should we trust you?

They can trust me because the things I have promised I have delivered!

How do you make peace profitable?

Canada is a good indicator. People always have difference. There should be discussion at the table instead of at the end of a rifle.

Artist Linda Anderson

This story is a repeat, and the pieces featured, “Be Still My Heart” Horse and “Knowledge Keeper” Raven are now available at the Leza Macdonald Art Gallery Main Street Oliver.

Every so often an artist is lucky enough to meet one of her hero’s. I sat down to have a long waited for chat with one of my fav artist and photographers, Linda Anderson.

Linda styles in her painting accessories, that extra pair of glasses and her headphones with  Adelle, Lindsay Sterling and some powerful movie themes giving her the right beat for her brushes to dance to. And those brushes dance!

I was introduced to this fabulously talented Artist in 2012, we became Facebook friends and I have enjoyed her work and her post about her family ever since. There is a little grand daughter I hold close to my heart.

What a treat to be invited to her home. I was excited to look at her studio. Us artists call that corporate spying . . .  now how does she do that!  We chatted across her work table while Linda showed me the feathers she paints on and gave me some technical info on why some feathers work and others don’t.

The Osoyoos Indian Band gave one of her feathers to Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean. Photo borrowed from Linda’s Facebook page.

Linda is self taught and as the world went for the 1900’s to the 2000’s Linda started painting. First on rocks with her grand kids then onto canvas in 2004. She had a couple of BIG wooden canvases in her studio, we talked about the price. It is an artist thing. No idea about the price of gas but we need to know about a good sale on supplies!

I was honour to get a tour of the paintings on her walls. They tell the story of her painting history from early works like the close up of flickers to her own petroglyph designs to the horse with the heart on her easel. This horse is painted from one of her photos. Magnificent work.

Born in Oliver at the old hospital she has 3 kids and 7 grandkids and gets a beautiful smile on her face when she talks about them.

One of her fav things to do is craft night at the OIB Health Centre. It is just women and she is learning to bead, very enjoyable she says.

Now for the gossip. Linda will be the feature artist in November at the new Leza Macdonald Art Gallery on Main St.

I walked away feeling joyful and inspired. We both love art, the land here, the desert, the antelope brush, bugs and the weather. I feel we bonded!

Thank you Linda!

Dave Mattes for Council

What are you thinking! Running for council, opening yourself up to public scrutiny, you have already done this?

I’m thinking I have something positive to add to the Oliver Council. I was born and raised here and want Oliver to remain the great place to live while we grow. That requires maintaining our infastructure while acting on opportunity while remaining affordable.

When on council, how do you represent people with an opposite opinion to yours, specially if theirs is the majority?

It is not a matter of representing a view for or against it is about listening to all points of view. Drawing out all points of view and then making decisions in the best view of the town.

Name a historical leader you admire.

King Solomon. He was fair

Define leadership.

Leadership  is the ability to understand a goal, articulate the goal and motivate yourself and other to collectively achieve this goal. Think Martin Luther king.

What do you want to say to those who see only the rock star hair? Which I notice you have cut!

Beneath this hair is an ability to work with others, to define problems, set goals and work with others to achieve them.

Why should we trust you?

During my previous time on council, I demonstrated I was trustworthy and could be counted on to look at issues from all angles. Those that know me know my word is my bond.

What is the cost of freedom?
It is different for everyone. For some it is their lives, others it is money for myself it is time.
