Just what are these two talking about?

On the East Road to Pentiction I saw these two having a conversation. I wonder what they are saying?

Dear Oliver, Thank you!

“All of Her, Skater Girl”

Thank you so much for your support!! Over 16,000 hits in less than 4 months. oliveronline.ca is located at 6250 Main St. Feel free to drop in and give me something to chat about.

I am having lots of fun with plan B. The Gallery is great fun and a hugh learning curve. oliveronline.ca‘s is fun. However moving the studio from McGowan to Rd 2 is a bit taxing.

One of oliveronline’s stories was on the Small Wheels Skate Park. Our Legion 97 was very kind in their support of Parks and Rec and the young people who will benefit from the park. I hung out with the kids for awhile and this is the painting that came from that meeting. Still in progress.

When I was younger I had an old wooden skate board, I swear the wheels where off roller skates, I would push till the top of the hill, skate all the way down to the flat part, stick out my thumb and catch a ride to the Eldorado for a wee splash with my friends. Oh the days of my youth and no broken bones.

The season to be jolly is upon us . . .oh good . . . the Gallery and Beyond Bliss will celebrate this with a Ladies night extravaganza! Stay tuned for details.

And again thank you for the support!

Susan Kosola for Council

What are you thinking! Running for council, opening yourself up to public scrutiny?

I did not pick politics, politics chose me.

When on council, how do you represent people with an opposite opinion to yours, specially if theirs is the majority?

My specialty is listening. I just have to hear them out and in this day and age you can’t please half of them Things are more polarized.

Name a historical leader you admire.

Prime Minister Trudeau Sr. I was in grade 7 the teacher took us to the 1968 federal debate. I was to draw the candidates, PM Trudeau brought a lot of progressive ideas to Canada! Stansfield signed my drawing but Trudeau was hard to draw.

Define leadership.

Leadership is taking facts, weighing option and choosing wisely. A good leader has the confidence to pick people brighter than themselves.

What do you want to say to those who just see a 60 plus woman?

They are just seeing me. People assume I am younger than I am because I am young at heart and I am not sedate. Life is about now.

Why should we trust you?

I am honest to a fault. You may say something but your face will betray you.

Would you rather live in a bad democracy or a good dictatorship?

A bad democracy, because you can fix it. Bad democracy can bring positive change once the majority gets it.

Rave Review of the Piano Cameleons Concert from Bob Park

Review of Piano Cameleons concert, Frank Venables Theatre, Nov.10, 2017

by Bob Park

There’s an old joke about the difference between jazz musicians and rock musicians. “A rock musician plays 3 chords for 20, 000 people. A jazz musician plays 20, 000 chords for 3 people.”

So, what happens if classical gets thrown in the mix? Turns out, the Piano Cameleons played those 20, 000 chords for over 200 people Friday night at the Frank Venables Theatre—and we gave them a standing ovation.

The South Okanagan Concert Society’s first concert of the 2017/18 season was over the top wonderful. Both the Frank Venables Theatre’s lobby piano ( a Petrof) and the concert society’s stage piano ( the Yamaha C3) had a workout as never before.

This high energy show took us on a captivating tour of familiar classical music themes infused with imaginative jazz twists and turns throughout. Every one of those “20,000 chords” brought us surprises and delight.

Having heard one of the pianists, internationally acclaimed Matt Herskowitz, perform solo in Oliver ten years ago—yes, on that dear old Steinway in that ageing school auditorium!I looked forward to this concert in which he was teaming up with another international great, jazz pianist John Roney. The rest of the audience had also clued in that this would be different—they didn’t all crowd to the one side to see a soloist’s hands on the piano keys. From all angles, it was such fun to watch these two world class musicians constantly interact with each other as they explored the possibilities of those beloved classical themes fused with the rich harmonic language and creativity of jazz. The music of Bach, Debussy, Grieg, Rachmaninov, Chopin and Beethoven was given new life as they re-interpreted it for us so masterfully, all the while referencing the spirit of the original.

As I listened to Matt and John pushing harmonic boundaries so effortlessly and with a smile, I wondered what those old masters would have thought of people tampering with their music. When you consider that these composers were either considered off the wall, avant garde or inveterate improvisers in their own time, I suspect they probably would have joined us in standing and shouting, “Bravo!”

In this entire program of excellence what really stood out for me was the Piano Cameleons’ performance of Beethoven’s well-known “Pathetique” Sonata.

Besides playing the two first movements mentioned on the program, they treated us to the “premiere in BC” of the third movement, which they had just finished working up. Watching them egg each other on, feeding off each other’s energy and enthusiasm, we witnessed Beethoven morphing into “All the Things You Are”, and then into “Blueberry Hill”, and then into something that sounded like the soundtrack to an Alfred Hitchcock horror movie! Wonderful stuff! Somewhere Beethoven and Fats Domino are smiling.

Music lovers in the South Okanagan: mark your calendars for January 19, 2018. Another duo, this one a 26 year old pianist and her 19 year old brother on the cello. Check out the Frank Venables website, for the Cheng2Duo and other future musical delights which the South Okanagan Concert Society has in store for the rest of the concert season.
