Volley Ball Tournament with Kiera.

Story and photos by SOSS Volleyball player Kiera.
It all starts on the bus. Sharing a bus with the junior boys we all head to Kelowna to try winning the tournament . The girls lose the first game on the third set. 10- 15

On the second game girls win on third set 15- 11 our winning point from Nya.

We lose again in the second set with 21-25
In our 4 th game we lose once again but we were close to carrying on to a third set having being 21-25 CNB was just a little ahead.

We lose our last game but we all can say that we had a great time. We partied and pretended it was someone birthday.

So in the end we can say this was a great trip and we are all excited for our next tournament in Kamloops next week starting Friday and ending on the Saturday. Wish us luck!

Lutz Stelzner candidate for Oliver Council

What are you thinking? Running for council!
Same thing as everyone else that is running. I can do this!
How do you represent people with an opposite opinion when in council.
I would represent everyone with dignity and respect regardless of their opinion.
Name a ruler you admire.
King David, I aspire to his character. He was hard working, very intelligent, integrity in itself!

Define leadership.
Leadership is being able to accept responsibility for your actions. Comes down to integrity, when you say you are going to do something – do it!

What do you want to say to the people who just see grey hair
I would like to say to people who only see grey hair, that grey hair comes with many years of experience and wisdom that we should try to effectively use when finding solutions.
Why should we trust you?
During my time in the military, I received a general’s accommodation for my dedication to duty, I also received a Canadian decoration for 12 years of dedicated service  and I was the top student of 72 students on my Junior leaders course. The honesty, integrity and dedication  to duty that I learned while in the military I carry forward into to my civilian careers. These values are part of the reason why you should consider putting your trust in me.
And one more Lutz.
Would you rather live in a good dictatorship or a bad democracy?
Neither!
I would not live in a good dictatorship, sometimes we live in a bad democracy but we can vote them out in four years.

Look up!

Look up and feel the pride our little town of Oliver is showing for the men and women who gave there lives for us to have our freedoms!

Freedoms like being able to voice our opinions, gathering to protest and yes the big one that lots of us take for granted – VOTING!

The Rotary, Kiwanis, Oliver Legion 97 and the town of Oliver got together to support the Oliver Remembrance Day Banner project. The beautiful banners have the names, chosen at random, of 22 of Oliver’s fallen heroes.

Come on down to Main Street, look up and check out Oliver’s latest street accessory! Take a quiet moment to thank the name on the banner!

Rainbow on Main Street!

Welcome to Oliver Downtown!Main Street Oliver, where the rainbow is.

Now just what should we do with it? Dress it up? Dress it down? Do we need a butcher shop a cheese shop a penny arcade? Some new folks are excited we have a video store. Not many of them left.

The dilemma in a nut shell is how do we attrack business to Main St that Oliverites will support?

What is on your wish list?

The town wants input. And yes they need volunteers! This is your chance instead of sitting around complaining after the fact get in there and help make the decisions.

Speaking of Volunteers . . . During one of my “learning while wondering around” downtown Oliver, I came across an amazing group of people. “For the Least of Us”.

Debbie McGuire, Susan Dyck and Bob Dyck hang out in the back alley of 6250 Main Street. On top of Beyond Bliss.

A few days a week volunteers fill the shelves full with tons, literally tons! Actually four, 40 ft. containers, this year full of clothes, household goods and kids toys! They clean them up fold them up and send them to Transnistria, Moldova. The items stock 20 stores, employ lots of women, provide inexpensive clothes and household goods for all. After the women, shipping and the bills are paid the money left over goes to the Orphanages. One more good thing in Oliver to do with the abundance of stuff we have.

Bring items on Tuesdays or Thursdays and they will be gratefully received and turned into treasures for someone on the other side of our world. They do have a request, clean, zippers working, no buttons missing, no cat hair and no mens suits.

Thanks guys!

Invictus, Latin for Unconquered

Lutz Stelzner, 2 silver Medal Winner for Tandem Bike riding

Invictus, the Victorian poem

BY WILLIAM ERNEST HENLEY

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
      For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.Lutz Stelzner, silver medal winner times two, for tandem bike riding, was at the Oliver Legion #97 for a bit of a celebration. It is not everyday we have a medal winner gracing the canteen.
Lutz really knows how to style in those matching silver medal accessories against the perfect red jacket from the Invictus games held in Toronto. Lutz is chatting with Legion President Peter McKenna, Councillor Petra and Sargent at Arms and long time friend Jim Stewart.
The whole family showed up to support him.Grandson Lake, 13, said “The fact that he is blind and had the guts to do it is amazing!”Granddaughter Havanna, 10, help him with training and cheered him on. Havanna did confess she was surprised he got two medals . . he is blind and he did it!Grandson Ashwin a future Air Cadet wants to join the military and protect our country!
Oliver Legion President Peter McKenna, offer a 2018 membership to Lutz only to fine out the Dominion already took care of his membership. We will pick up the 2019’s membership Says the President.
Lutz is blind, totally in one eye and pinhole vision in the other. His wife Gillian says there are no words to describe how amazing it is to watch him train. The Invictus games pulled him out of a depression an gave him a purpose to go in and improve day by day. It is not about the podium it is about getting back into life. It was the greatest experience of a life time.
Always taking time to just hang out with the people of Oliver, MP Dick Canning and Councellor Petra take the time to come down and congratulate Lutz, Olivers own 2 Sliver Medal winner!
Lutz is looking for funding for a better bike, he won the medals riding the oldest bike in the race and a pilot to train with. Gillian said she did worry he would fall off the bike.
Gillian wants to send a special  thank you to Prince Harry and the 1500 Volunteers at the Invictus Games.

Awesome job Lutz. Oliver is proud of you!

Down on Main Street, Oliver.

Meet Millie!

You never know who you are going to meet down on Main Street! Wondering around the Sagebrushers Gallery I meet bookkeeper Millie. She has enough clients for that part of her life!

However she has a passion.

Look at her office, on one side, all that is necessary for book keeping, on the other side is a sewing machine! And everything else needed for her passion.

Millie is a quilter, of just 2 years! Below is her version of the four seasons of Oliver.

Simply beautiful and it shows her great talent!

Millie moved here on a whim a few years ago and loves it, she feels save here! Is amazed at the talent and the friendly people.

Oliver is a nice place to be says Millie and the wineries are fun too.
