On My Summer Holidays . . .

Out and about in Oliver I stopped in at the Quails Nest on Airport Street for a wee J&T . . . that is Jen and Terry!

Weavers and Spinners, Jen and Wild Woman, Terry rent the QN for a week, great deal people, and cook up the colours to dye their fabrics and wools for the amazing creations they will be making to sell in the fall. Put my order in for a new pair of Terry’s mitts. Lost just one, not both last winter!

Jen poising for her close up of an eco dyed tablecloth . . love it!To fix the eco dyes the ladies used rusty nails!

Love the coloursThis gorgeous pink comes from those little bugs they make red lipstick out of the Cochineal bug . . I do love bugs!

Terry’s mixed media sculpture “Jane” inspired by Toulouse Lautrec. Her hat is felted, blouse is eco dyed and the skirt is a weaving . . brilliant! Keep an eye out for the Christmas fairs to collect the wearable art these ladies, J&T will create!

Oliver! Where in the smoke are you?

We can barely see the Bluff!

Bell just wants to chase sticks and play in the water.

Some just want to go fly a kite

And this is a very large piece of ash that traveled from one of the fires to Oliver.

Stay safe and report all fires *5555

Oliver Roots and Fruits Expo: Check out the line-up!

Mexican Folklore Dance Group

We’re only a week away from Oliver’s Roots and Fruits Expo on Saturday, August 18th, and the line-up of entertainment is nothing short of phenomenal. This year, entertainment will trade off on two stages, which means music and dancing will be non-stop all day. Oliver Parks and Recreation is excited to welcome first to the Rotary Main Stage the Okanagan Mexican Folklore Dancers (12:30pm) and the ever-popular Oliver’s Got Talent Show (1:00pm).  The talent show, proudly sponsored by WOW and The Dance Studio, will feature comedy, vocal, dance and poetry reciting performances by the following local youth (in no particular order): Kelan Harty, Therese Grice, Ava Grice, Hazel Sheridan, Laura Harty, Kristina and Joey Decker, Dee Shaw, Olivia Miller, Kate Mackenzie and Kylie Mackenzie.

Next up on the Rotary Main Stage will be Just Us Too, a local duo who performs music from country to classic rock and everything in between (2:30 pm), followed by a performance of popular kid’s sing-along songs at the Children’s Stage at 3:30pm. Local singer songwriter Kristi Neumann will play at 4:30 pm and at 5:45pm the Oliver Buy-Low Foods Main Stage will “rock around the clock” with Judy and the Diamonds. Storytelling, drumming and dance workshops will take place at the Children’s Stage throughout the day.

Plan to stay all evening: evening headliners on the Buy-Low Foods Main Stage include “Knacker’s Yard” (7:00 pm) and “Toonmade” (8:45 pm).

Knacker’s Yard is a seven member Celtic band hailing from Victoria, BC. From get-up-and-dance bar-room brawlers to traditional English, Irish and Scottish ballads and folksongs, Knacker’s Yard music will get your feet and your soul moving.

ToonMade is making waves in the local music scene with music it describes as love + folk + rock, a little bit of country & a wee bit of pop. Lisa Toon (daughter of Rocky and Nancy Moore) was born and raised in Oliver and moved back here a year ago to pursue music full-time with her ultra-musical husband, Stephen. Expect soul-stirring harmonies, poetic lyrics, and a wide variety of styles and instruments.

A full listing of entertainment along with bios and photos of the performers is available on the event website.

The Oliver Roots and Fruits Expo is an all day, free-to-all, fun for all ages celebration of our little town, its agriculture and its history. Plan to stay all day at Oliver Community Park: entertainment kicks off at 11:00 am and runs non-stop until 10:00 pm.  Check out full event details at http://www.oliverrecreation.ca/oliver-sunshine-festival/.

Good Morning Oliver!

Another fabulous weekend in Oliver, I even ventured a bit south to take in the opening of Wendy Wells-Bailey and Micheal Jorden at Jojo’s Cafe.

Wendy Wells-Bailey with Jim from Jojo’s and Michael Jorden

Wendy Wells-Bailey paints the stories to be told with a pallet to tantalize your eyes.  The soft brushstrokes of Michael Jordan compliment the edgey colours, shapes and strong  lines of Wendy. Their contrast are as pleasing to the eye as their similarities.

Open Mic at Jojo’s gave some very sexy sounds to entertain the audience.

Wendy Wells-Bailey with Diane Carter, the marketing behind the talent!

Take a venture down south, not to far south, check out the show at Jojo’s then pop down to the Okanagan Art Gallery, 8302 Main St, Osoyoos, BC,  to see more of Wendy and Michael’s work.
